چکیده

While several computed tomographic (CT) studies of posterior third ventricular neoplasms have included descriptions of pineal tumors, few reports have concentrated on these uncommon lesions. Some authors have asserted that the CT appearance of many pineal tumors is virtually pathognomonic. A series of nine biopsy-proved pineal gland and eight other presumed tumors is presented that illustrates their remarkable heterogeneity in both histopathologic and CT appearance. These tumors included germinomas, teratocarcinomas, hamartomas, and other varieties. They had variable margination, attenuation, calcification, and suprasellar extension. Germinomas have the best response to radiation therapy. Biopsy of pineal region tumors is now feasible and is recommended for treatment planning.

CT of pineal region tumors.

The computed tomographic (CT) features of pineal region tumors were analyzed in 60 histologically proven tumors. This is the largest reported series of histologically verified pineal region tumors studied with CT. The tumors were classified as germ-cell tumors, glial tumors, pineal parenchymal tumors, and meningiomas. Preenhancement germinomas revealed characteristically high-density areas with...

Pineal Anlage Tumor: Case Report and Review of Literature

The pineal gland is a midline organ located posterior to the third ventricle in the quadrigeminal cistern. It is surrounded by the splenium of the corpus callosum above, the thalami laterally, and the quadrigeminal plate and vermis below, together delineating the pineal region [1]. Histologically, the human pineal gland parenchyma is mainly composed of pineocytes with a few supportive astrocyte...

CT of pineal tumors and intracranial germ-cell tumors.

We reviewed 59 cases of pineal tumors and intracranial germ-cell tumors. Most pineal tumors occurred in the first three decades of life, with the exception of pineocytomas, which were seen at a mean age of 34. A male preponderance was noted in the various pineal tumors, except for pineocytomas. The most common tumor of the pineal region was germinoma, which usually showed high density with homo...

Meningiomas of pineal region in children.

Meningiomas are uncommon tumors in children and either more rarely encountered in the pineal region. We report two cases of meningioma of the pineal region in children. One of these cases was a five years-old girl and the other a one year-old boy. No specific clinical presentation or tomographic examinations findings was identified before treatment, suggestive of a diagnosis of meningioma. The ...

Central nervous system tumors with ependymal features: a broadened spectrum of primarily ependymal differentiation?

Ependymomas are well-characterized central nervous system (CNS) tumors that occur most often in children and young adults. Several other CNS tumor entities, including astroblastoma, chordoid glioma, papillary tumor of the pineal region, angiocentric glioma, and pilomyxoid astrocytoma, variably display histopathologic features of ependymal differentiation. The ependymal differentiation in some o...
